Shell
Maintaining On-road Vehicle Performance
![]()
A programme showing the performance benefits of Shell Diesel Extra. Aimed mainly at truck drivers and haulage companies, this programme explains how the fuel cleans and protects the engine from the inside, providing extra power and fuel efficiency to the driver.
The programme was also recreated in two different stereoscopic viewing formats, for a publicity event and to be shown in the Shell reception area. One format required the use of polarised 3D glasses and the other was for the Philips 3D Wow screen which shows a stereoscopic 3D effect without the need for glasses.
One younger viewer described the stereoscopic effect as "well cool" !

The Shell-fuelled truck alongside the non Shell-fuelled truck

The camera moves down between the front wheel and the cab to see the engine

![]()
Part of the engine turns transparent for us to see inside, showing the combustion chambers and pistons

![]()
We move into the non Shell-fuelled engine. The combustion chamber and the injectors are coated with dirt and carbon created in the combustion process

![]()
The holes of this injector are blocked by the dirt, leading to an uneven and restricted fuel spray pattern

![]()
This causes a reduction in engine power and can also mean the generation of black smoke

![]()
However, the injectors in the Shell-fuelled truck are kept clean by the fuel

![]()
This means an even spray pattern, giving efficient and complete combustion

The driver of the Shell-fuelled truck has 100% power available

This split screen image showed the results of real overtaking data:
The extra power available in the Shell-fuelled truck means it can overtake quicker than the non Shell-fuelled truck which is affected by even a small gradient

The Shell-fuelled truck completes the overtake manoeuvre 20 seconds before the non Shell-fuelled truck
